Adelaide: The Aboriginal Experience
Visitors to Adelaide, in Southern Australia, have the unique opportunity to sample Aboriginal life at the Tandanya National Cultural Institute. Using many different forms of media and expression, guests will discover the Aboriginal people of Australia as they live today, and learn why they are such an important part of Australia’s history.
Tandanya was founded in 1989 and has become Australia’s premier center for the study of Aboriginal culture. The name Tandanya was adapted from the local Aborigines and refers to the place of the “red Kangaroo.” The center has an international reputation for supporting Aboriginal art and culture.
Guests of the center will meet native Aborigine people and participate in a guided tour of the center’s exhibitions and galleries. A yidaki performance, or dance, is part of the tour. Traditional dances each tell a story about the original Aborigines of the Adelaide plains.
Visitors who would like to tour the exhibits on their own may do so by following the “Red Kangaroo” footprints located throughout the museum. Each footprint corresponds to an exhibit or display noted on the complementary brochure. The self-guided tour is perfect for visitors wanting to spend more time in the galleries and display rooms.
Using both the performing arts and traditional art forms, the Tandanya offers visitors to Adelaide an authentic Aboriginal experience unlike any other. A trip through the colorful past of these interesting and historically important Australian natives will leave guests with a deep appreciation of their culture and traditions.
